Jason Gourdine is a preacher’s kid. So he learned the ways of the church from a young age, contributing in particular ways.

He played keyboards, adding musical ambiance to the worship experience. Years ago, he accompanied the Easter play at Truth Tabernacle Church.

“It was so bad, I was embarrassed,” he recalled. “So the following year I wrote a script and produced it.”

He’d had no experience of that kind, but he thought he was doing well. And it got Gourdine thinking: Maybe he could produce a show for local cable television.

He started by using his smartphone, then moved to the desktop, which he had equipped with editing software. He rallied volunteers he knew from church and had them perform sketches he’d written.

When he showed the results to his TV contact, the reaction was, well, honest.

“This is terrible!” his contact exclaimed.

Gourdine had to agree. It was pretty bad. But the disappointment only strengthened his resolve. Now he would write a proper script, announce a casting call, and assemble a group of experienced actors.
